The modern software industry is in thrall to practices that are impediments to good work and productivity. Older developers miss being able to focus; younger ones think focus is antisocial. The abandonment of this recognition is the reason for the industry’s floundering in wasteful management fads.

The Generational Divide in Software Developers

The title should be “boomer rant”. I agree with most of the points. The most important is the interruptions. How am I supposed to work if I have 2 or 3 meetings every day? I have to join the meeting and listen about what everyone is going to do this day. Why am I wasting 3 hours per day on just listening on things that have no value to me?

I agree with author’s points but I don’t agree that this a generational divide. All of these issues are present on corporate environments (mostly) and the author is really tired of them.
The author lost me on section “Some People Won’t Be Able To”. Why is he mad to under 40 year olds and not the companies themselves?
Everyone that is here right now is reading books, taking courses and constantly improving. Blaming video games… for what? For agile and TDD?
Author’s seems to be split between being a corporate admirer (long hours, no fun outside work, “we are family”) and freedom (no meetings, no interruptions, writing boring tests).
I know he wanted to write an article with the issues of modern software development, but this reads like a diary note.
He seems very tired to me.

Very interesting thoughts shared by author. While I am new to programming, I understand his points about not being able to concentrate lately because of agile processes and unnecessary meetings.

He definitely has some valid points as to meetings and such.  I’ve been a developer since the early 2000’s, am over 40, and have worked at places with strict agile methodologies, practically no methodologies, and others in between.  Hands down the most productive was those with some methodology and planning.  It also produces higher quality code which in the end takes up less time being maintained, leading developers free to write new code.  I’m not the type to rush headlong into coding as fast as I can.  I like to implement patterns and have a plan as I’ve always found it worked much better in the long run though initially it takes longer to get a feature out.
Beyond this, as is often true in life, there is more than one way to do a thing.  It’s a logical fallacy to assume there’s always just one thing or another to choose from.
