A review of realfood.gov examines its modern tech stack (React, Next.js, Framer Motion) and interactive scroll-based animations. The site represents a significant improvement over typical government websites, though the reviewer critiques the heavy reliance on scrub animations tied to scroll position rather than time-based animations, which creates readability issues and requires excessive scrolling. The design and UI are praised, but the user experience could be improved with better animation triggers and reduced scroll fatigue.

The First Government Website to Not Suck?

I’m tired of people thinking that a flashy UI makes a good website. Animations for animations sake isn’t good design… it’s ego.
I think Estonia’s business portal is a much better example. It’s not the prettiest but it is user-friendly and users can get in, file their taxes, and get out. Takes about 10-20 mins to file taxes. To me, THAT is a good government website.
US State Department has a pretty good website overall (until you get down into the details where everything is written by lawyers) and so does <a href="http://Trade.gov" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Trade.gov</a>.
The biggest problem with most government websites (that actually work) is that the content is written by lawyers for lawyers or accountants. It’s not written for normal people trying to get information.
Additionally, forms on government websites are generally terrible. They aren’t styled or styled inconsistently and will often redirect to a third party system with an equally bad UI. It just looks and feels sketchy when the average user is used to polished user flows on commercial websites and apps.
In short, I think government websites need less flashiness, and more UI/UX research and human-centric copy.

Poor usability, over-engineered tech stack, almost 300 MB of memory usage?!?!? It just sucks in a different way.

Eventhough the animations are pretty sick, I still think that it’s complete utter bullshit to design a government website like this.
It seems like they just dont give a flying f*ck about the user experience - it’s so annoying when you scroll and nothing happens (yes, it’s “part of the animation” still annoying). If you’re actually interested in the informations given, you basically have to go through all the animations to get to the part you want to.
And imagine an elderly person visiting this website - they’ll probably get a stroke.
Doesn’t really fit the case (my humble opinion)

I assume it is supposed to be an information portal, and there is no way to quickly search for the information you are looking for. Also, too much scrolling.
