I do understand where you come from but I do disagree with the “creating a website portfolio is a big mistake” part
There are multiple ways of learning, the one presented here is a fundamentals-first learning method. You first learn what you need to know before you build something with it
But if you let people make something they want (like a website portfolio) they will hit missing knowledge they are highly motivated to learn about.
I found in my own learning and in the people I mentored that the second method keeps the motivation higher for longer, meaning they get further. That is for most people

Good article overall for beginning developers, but like was mentioned before, I can’t agree with a portfolio website being a big mistake.
These days, success in the IT market is all about building a personal brand, and a portfolio website can be a part of that. Besides that, creating such a website by yourself can be an alternative way of gaining valuable experience.
