Why is AWS deprecating a bunch of services all of a sudden, and what does it mean for you?

AWS is deprecating several low-usage services to focus more on its core offerings like EC2 and S3. This shift, led by new leadership, aims to streamline AWS's service portfolio and enhance its primary infrastructure-as-a-service offerings. While this move may cause uncertainty regarding the stability of newer services, it is seen as a necessary step to allocate resources effectively and maintain AWS's leading position in cloud services.

I support that decision. Maybe the process wasn’t the best by the timing and communication, but considering this is somewhat “new” to AWS (deprecating services), it’s comprehensible…

This sort of calls into question decisions that were made during the AWS build out phase. I was excited for the big reveal at AWs re:Invent, and I’ve followed and read a lot of well known engineers who helped create these services. A lot of folks answered the siren song of cloud services, and now I think they regret it.
For sure AWS CEO Matt Garman is taking a cutthroat approach toward cost optimization. Inevitably someone had to clean up the mess but taking a piecemeal approach will only undermine developer confidence and leave architects suspicious of cloud services that don’t have widespread adoption.

I can understand the need to streamline services, but as someone who’s invested time into learning and implementing these now-deprecated services, it’s a bit disheartening 😞. Would love to see a clear deprecation roadmap from AWS to help us plan better.
