the same was said about web dev. and html when flash and wix came out…ai isnt going to make programming obsolete, people do.

I just watched this video post twice, why twice, is you where jumping a bit all over the map, but, while I have been trying to decide if you are one of my favorite posters or not may have just been decided. First, while you don’t know me I have been watching you for a bit and for the most part I like your style. I have been in “the business” of over 45 years, and I like anyone with this level of experience has seen it all. I like those the that Tim O’Reilly was talking about have come up through the ranks, of flipping switches, doing punch cards, &quot;writing machine code, assembler, fortran, cobol, basic, C, C++, python, etc…
All these languages, where fundamentally tools for getting your ideas into a machine, the computer, to do repetitive tasks done quicker and more precisely. Hell even the editors/development environment, ed, vi, vim, nvim, vscode, pycharm, are tools to make using the tools, the languages, easier to use. Let’s face it, humans strive to make things easier for ourselves, thus the advent of LLM (AI), is the next iteration of this tool creation. Sort of like how we started with an rock, then a hammer, then a nail gun…
While the AI can allow humans who have not had all the backstory of computing through the ages, to have some code produced that might actually accomplish what it was they intended, and this is the point you were trying to make if I’m not mistaken, but it doesn’t mean its going to be good code, reusable code, maintainable code even with the aid of an LLM. The LLM is going to keep rewriting it, not necessarily fixing it, improving it, I have actually tried it, I in my home lab, have one of my Linux hosts that can run most of the available LLM models locally, and I have had model “A” produce some code from first a simple prompt, then making several reiterative rounds while testing the code by hand until it works reasonably well. Then taking that code and giving it to a different LLM “B” to add some more functionality, capture some additional data, and produce a “improved interface”. The result after several “rounds” was completely rewritten code, that didn’t even look anything like the original, this wasn’t a rebase, this was a rewrite, the only thing that successfully got modified was the database, that survived relatively unscathed. Now could I have done this without an LLM or two or more, of course, it would have taken a LOT longer, would I have felt that I would have bothered to go to such lengths if I knew I have to do it all by hand , maybe, maybe not. My point here, as was yours, that AI is NOT the end of programming as we know it, it is the evolution to those who know how to program, it a far better tool that will evolve in itself to be an even better tool. The one point you made about the person who has actually struggled to learn how to programm making that are of the brain grow to make a skill is far better than the person who only can rely on the AI to produce anything.
All this buzz about AI replacing developers, programmers, engineers, etc, is quite honestly crap, it will make those who can better, and it will make those who can’t dependant on something that could easily be taken away. For most of my current work is in the area of systems security, and I have a specially trained model to assist me in the day to day “cyber security” (hate that term but,) work, but it still require the human element to deal with whatever is needing to be fixed/defended/protected properly, yes the tool (AI) makes it easier, faster, but does not replace.

just upskiling phase , good programmers will always be there as they build not write code, writing code had to be automated now or later
just like when High level language came out, ,it just increased the developers in the market, same will happen, keep learning
