The Death of the Stubborn Developer

Yeah, another “AI is changing the world” crap. As if you would loose anything when you do not use LLMs to do your work. Sorry that’s just full of bull! The opposite is the case! As all (yes, it’s almost all!) juniors head to their ChatGpt prompt they loose every single capability you need - worse, they never learn it.
It’s just different having to think for yourself than to let it give it to you. By the way, everything you get from actual “AI” (stupid name whatsoever) is what people put in. So no, ChatGpt cannot solve my problems. I have to figure things out myself and grace god I still know how to work out ideas and solutions. Thanks.

As if Yegge’s first article wasn’t bad enough, he follows up with this crap. And I’ll be honest, I had to skim read it.
What annoys me the most: he started talking about “chop” before defining it (I actually had to do an in-page search to figure out what he was talking about), and then it’s an acronym but he almost always spells it in lower case. Maybe he needs AI to write his articles (and summarise them - what a rambling length at over 4100 words) so people and actually understand them.
I have no doubt Generative AI has had some impact on the software development industry, but let’s be real and understand this is still early days and the marketing/hype train is going strong. And Yegge has well and truly bought into it.

The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.

Nope LLMs are not able to do “leaf tasks” without competent human. Yes it can help do things faster, but it isn’t enough. Task like “write an auth library” as something for Junior? Brave decision ;-)
LLMs are able to do wonders when you are prototyping, testing ideas, or need some very specific thing which is intended to be closed and not touched in future. Coding LLMs are nice to have as smart code completion. But with LLMs still you need to work with “trust but verify” or even “control is the highest form of trust” attitude. Because without it simple changes will make your life and work harder later.

“You MUST use AI for everything” they say.
Then we get stuff like yesterday’s MASSIVE OpenAI outage that would have stopped me from working for half the day if I didn’t actually know how to write code for myself.
I’m a stubborn developer. So stubborn I refuse to die.
