Beyond the financial motives, many of these cybercriminals are also involved in online groups that bully, extort, and harass vulnerable teens, leading them to harm themselves or others. These cybercrime collectives, known as 'The Com,' operate across various social media platforms like Telegram and Discord and are involved in extreme activities ranging from sextortion to physical violence. Authorities are increasingly viewing and prosecuting these actions under domestic terrorism statutes.
