The Compose key is a Linux feature that lets you type special characters and emoji by pressing a designated key followed by intuitive key sequences (e.g., Compose + e + = produces €, Compose + < + 3 produces ♥). You can map any existing key (like right Windows key) to act as Compose via xkb options. A custom ~/.XCompose file lets you define your own sequences for emoji, arrows, and punctuation. Setup on a Wayland window manager also requires an IME like IBus; NixOS users get a one-liner config option. A sample .XCompose file with emoji and arrow shortcuts is provided.
