Drew DeVault argues that the Commons Clause — a license addendum that restricts commercial use — poses an existential threat to open source software. Using Redis Labs' adoption of the clause as a case study, he contends it effectively converts open source projects into proprietary software. He criticizes Contributor License Agreements as enabling this kind of relicensing, and proposes better alternatives for open source sustainability: hosted/supported versions, consulting, dual licensing (AGPL/BSD), and direct business sponsorships. He calls on the Commons Clause's creator to abandon the initiative entirely.
