The best way to learn Linux is by using the Arch Wiki and man pages for necessary commands. Despite the reputation of Arch Linux as being for advanced users, its automated installer makes it accessible for beginners too. You can also use Manjaro for a GUI-based setup. While YouTube tutorials can be helpful, they often lack the detail and accuracy of written documentation. Moreover, setting up Vim for man pages can enhance your learning experience with syntax highlighting and better navigation features. Tools like TLDR and WikiMan can also simplify learning by providing concise command documentation and offline access to the Arch Wiki.

Best way to start is to install user friendly distro and use it as your daily OS. Reading about commands, details about internals is useful for limited audience, even if audience == developers.

Install a light-weight distro you can move around in. This could either be locally (VirtualBox, QEMU/KVM, WSL, UTM) or with a hosted provider. Follow a few guides for setting things up (Like a firewall, or a some kinda webserver, etc). This should be command-line only, getting the user exposed to:

<li>file system / directory traversal</li>
<li>listing files</li>
<li>file operations (copy, move, rm, maybe a chmod)</li>
<li>updating the system</li>
<li>installing a package</li>
<li>creating/editing a file</li>
<li>starting a service</li>
<li>introduction to <code>manual</code> pages</li>
<li>In a perfect world, the user might also learn to add a user.</li>

‘Learning Linux’ is an incredibly encompassing phrase. “Doing” is the oversimplified answer, but doing what is where it gets tricky. There was a time when learning how to just install linux felt like a technical feat (looking at you, Arch, Gentoo).
I guess I’m curious…what does the community think ‘learning linux’ means? Is it understanding how hooking kernel functions work? Is it knowing how to change the clock widget in your XMobar? (Or how to change to Polybar?). Is it knowning how to use LXC or Docker containers? Is it understanding the differences between ip chains, ip tables, ipfw?
Distros don’t do many favors when it comes to learning, in my op— how cool would it be for someone to create a LInux distro that step-by-step walked the user from <code>$ </code> to a full desktop? That might be neat.

Ubuntu is a far better to learn about linux than Arch. You need a friendly introduction to learn something daunting.
