I would like to recommend it to beginners. Because only so you can easily participate in big game. you learn how big games work what completely unexpected things can break :)
I recommended checking out Thrive (which is basically Spore 2) it is under the GNU GPLv3.0-or-later they operate on github have a good and easy guide how to start to contribute. If you come from Unity it’s especially easy since it’s all C# in Thrive
