The arm-based chip race is heating up with major players like Samsung, Google, Microsoft, Intel, Amazon, and Google all joining. Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon X Elite chip may outperform the M4. x86 architecture is still relevant with Intel and AMD releasing new processors.

<p>Apple makes great hardware and by all means I would like to have one of their products with an m4 processor, and I will pay the premium for the 16 gigs / decent storage space. My problem with apple is the walled garden, the virtually no upgrade path and the hostility towards open standards so I’ll wait for the Snapdragon X or whatever will offer a matching experience</p>


<p>I have read that GenAI developers who want to develop locally should get an Apple laptop/PC with an M1-M3 chip (price &amp; strength of processors). With that being said, I am wondering how much getting an Apple M4 laptop/PC would benefit someone in the position of doing local LLM development. Is it more cost-effective to get a used Apple device with an M1/M2/M3 chip? Can the faster CPU &amp; the M4 chip help with local GenAI development, for instance, improve the tokens/s that an LLM can spit out vs. an M3 chip?</p>
