Stripe built DocDB, a document database on top of MongoDB, to simplify scaling and data management. It allows developers to focus on their product without worrying about infrastructure. DocDB's architecture includes a Database Proxy server, Chunk Metadata Service, and CDC service for replication. Data migration between shards is performed with minimal downtime and strong data consistency.
