The 10x Developer vs. AI: Will Tech’s Elite Coder Be Replaced?

Just a couple things. This article’s author’s definition of a 10x developer is nearly unrealistic. I’ve been called a 10x dev where I work. But my goal isn’t “10x the output” of everyone else; if it were, my code would never get reviewed and merged.
Rather, it’s to help others maximize their output. That being said, AI tools are a great way to do that.
Second, Cosine seems proud of Genie, yet their website has a terrible UX on mobile and they don’t seem to be offering Genie for use. Maybe that’s just the mobile experience, but I didn’t see anywhere to go to enter a prompt. So, I’ll believe it when I see it.

This article is absolute trash.
The fact the author is even talking about “mythical 10x developers” (that topic should have been put to bed along ago) and then goes on to say AI “solve problems” - generative AI does not solve problem, at least not in the way that developers do.
An obviously biased article with the author being a co-founder of a Y Combinator backed AI start-up and riding their own GenAI slop train.

No mattter how much smarter, super engineer, super problem solver an AI “tool” or AI “app” becomes.
No matter how much faster gazillion lines of codes it can spit out, there will (always n always n always) × ∞ requirement for following “devs”

<li>Someone who checks the output.</li>
<li>Someone who feeds the “AI” with new data points and “intelligence” as market demands evolve.</li>

The problem with a lot of these articles is that the people writing it have stake in the AI industry and everything to gain with spreading this believe - that AI will replace developers. Yes AI is transformative, but thinking that someone with 10 years of experience can be replaced by someone junior with AI and produce the same output doesn’t make any sense. Doesn’t matter if machines are advancing fast our brains are staying the same. One argument is fair, software development became more accessible with generative AI, it’s a great tool for learning and researching. Taking a lot of the ambiguity out of the equation opposed to learning by reading documentation. This accessibility might create more jobs on one hand (Jevons paradox), but decrease average wages because many of the jobs created will require less skills. On the other hand knowing how to build software products at scale, is a never ending endeavour. It’s something you can’t do by prompting your way out of it, you actually need skills and experience.
