Keep in mind large cloud providers like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, etc. are rapidly moving to use renewable energy to power their data centers because it should be a lot more profitable for them in the long run to do so.

When it’s all said and done, I don’t think that software (or even the hardware it runs on) is where we need to focus to fix climate change. It’s a band aid solution to just reduce power consumption, and it doesn’t scale as population increases.
The only viable solution is to attack the source, and that would be where the energy we use comes from.
