After reading this, I’m reminded of a trading platform I worked on that kept having small errors that the users would have to resolve in a slush account. A nickel here, a dime there.
And of course, there were no unit tests on it. Not a one.
Turns out that, among its many faults, the code was freely interchanging <code>double</code> and <code>decimal</code> (floating- and fixed-point) variables. Thus, rounding errors everywhere. It was complete chaos.

Moral of the story : write tests.

Concur, testing is critical to software development, I have held for a while now that untested code is ‘not done’. Yes you can be reasonable, you want to cover your service modules etc. but if your controllers are ‘light’ (with no code logic only routing) I think you can generally skip testing those. But service layers and their helper methods should be tested, in particular I want to pay attention to the edge and error conditions that may be present.

Great article, its true that small startup does not write tests, I was okay with that when I joined, but now after a year, i’m starting to get that fear everyday, that “I hope it don’t break”, this is so stressing to be honest, and so i decided to tell my senior to include writing tests in our process. but, i think i just have to secretly start writing tests and make difference.

Testing is often either overdone or underdone. Tests are an important tool, but not all code needs automated tests.
