Tesla shut down its Dojo AI supercomputer project in August 2025 after six years of development, disbanding the team and pivoting to partnerships with Nvidia, AMD, and Samsung for chip production. Dojo was designed to train Tesla's Full Self-Driving neural networks using custom D1 chips, but the company decided it was an "evolutionary dead end" and chose to focus on its AI6 chip design instead. The shutdown represents a strategic shift from self-reliant hardware development to partnering with established chip manufacturers, despite previous investments of $314 million and ambitious goals to compete with Nvidia.
