The Golden Path (sometimes called the Golden Road) is an opinionated, supported, and well-documented path to shipping code to production. It includes recommended toolsets, configuration templates, and pre-approved security guardrails.

<li>Staying on the Golden Path: You get auto-configured CI/CD, built-in monitoring, automatically patched base images, and paved security roles. If something breaks, the platform team supports you.</li>
<li>Going off-path: You can still do it (true autonomy), but you now “own” the infrastructure toil yourself. You are responsible for your own security patching, monitoring, and debugging.</li>

Platform engineering isn’t just about saving the company money on cloud spend (though it helps with that through standardization). Its main value is saving your sanity.
By shifting operational complexity “down” onto the platform, it frees up your cognitive space to focus “up” on the business logic that matters.
When executed correctly, platform engineering transforms developers from “infrastructure operators who happen to write code” into “software creators who are empowered to own their services.”
