Take-Two Interactive has announced the sale of its indie and mid-sized game publishing label, Private Division, to an undisclosed buyer. The decision marks a strategic shift in focus towards Take-Two’s core strengths in larger AAA titles and expanding its presence in mobile gaming.
Private Division was launched in 2017 and gained recognition for publishing notable titles such as Kerbal Space Program, The Outer Worlds, and OlliOlli World. However, despite its successful portfolio, the label recently faced significant layoffs and criticisms, including the controversial reception of Kerbal Space Program 2.
The sale includes both live and unreleased titles under Private Division, with the notable exception of No Rest for the Wicked by Moon Studios, which Take-Two will continue to support. CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that the move is intended to align with the company’s mission of producing major hit games and expanding mobile-first experiences for both console and PC titles.
This decision follows a period of significant restructuring within Take-Two, including the integration of Zynga, which has bolstered the company’s mobile division. The firm has reported strong performance from its flagship franchises such as Grand Theft Auto and NBA 2K, and has ambitious plans for future game releases, including the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI slated for fiscal 2026.
While the buyer and financial details of the Private Division deal remain confidential, the sale underscores Take-Two’s commitment to its long-term goal of leading the market with blockbuster AAA games and a robust mobile game portfolio.
