I've been a huge fan of tailwind for over half a decade. Partially because it's a great library but also because it was cool to see a small team ship and maintain a functional business while maintaining it.

Tailwind CSS had to lay off engineers due to LLMs but is back with ui.sh, a new product that uses an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server to connect AI agents to their service. The author argues this is a smart business model: unlike sharing text files or CLIs, an MCP gives businesses a protected, paywall-able connection point that agents can interact with but can't easily reverse-engineer. This makes MCP a viable path for developer tool businesses to maintain relevance and revenue in an AI-dominated landscape.

Libraries have to find purpose in the AI era.

MCP will survive, Tailwind Labs won’t. Tailwind is an optimization layer for humans.

I hope they can make it work, Tailwind CSS has been such a great tool for a lot of projects I’ve built. Such a shame if they can’t make the financials work in the current market. Though I do wonder if it’s not just feature complete? Surely Adam can make some fat stacks on the conference circuit and with design books or something?
