Basel-Stadt, a Swiss canton, has suspended its e-voting pilot after failing to decrypt 2,048 ballots cast in national referendums on March 8. Three USB keys with the correct codes all failed to decrypt the votes, leaving them unreadable. The affected votes represented less than 4% of total ballots and would not have changed any results, but the canton has delayed confirming final figures until March 21, suspended the pilot until December, and launched criminal proceedings. An external investigation has been commissioned. Three other cantons and the Swiss Post e-voting system were unaffected. Switzerland has been running small-scale e-voting pilots to help citizens abroad participate in votes, following a previous failed attempt in 2019 that was scrapped due to security flaws.
