Linux developer Tejun Heo has posted a second iteration of patches implementing cgroup sub-scheduler support for sched_ext, targeting the Linux 7.1 merge window. The feature allows multiple BPF scheduler instances to be attached to the cgroup hierarchy, enabling application-specific scheduling for domain-aware workloads like databases, VMs, and game engines. Unlike hard CPU partitioning via cpuset, this approach enables dynamic CPU allocation without static partitioning, supporting opportunistic over-commit and cache-aware packing. If accepted, the feature could land in April during the Linux 7.1 merge window, with a stable release expected mid-year.
