Drawing on the Jevons Paradox from the Industrial Revolution, the argument is made that AI coding agents like Claude Code won't eliminate software developer jobs. Just as more efficient steam engines increased coal demand rather than reducing it, making software development more efficient will dramatically expand the total amount of software produced, not shrink the workforce. Job descriptions will evolve, as they always have, but the demand for software will grow beyond what we currently imagine.
