Stop putting off VLANs in your homelab — Proxmox SDN makes them almost too easy

Proxmox SDN (Software Defined Networking) makes it straightforward to integrate VLANs into a homelab setup. By defining SDN zones and VNets within the Proxmox Datacenter, VMs and LXC containers can be assigned to specific VLANs without manual per-VM configuration. The process involves creating a VLAN in OPNsense, enabling trunk ports to Proxmox nodes, defining an SDN zone, creating a VNet with the VLAN ID, and attaching it to instances. The recommended approach is to start with a dedicated test VLAN before rolling out to the full stack, since network-level firewall rules and switch trunk configuration are still required outside of Proxmox.
