I Agree with the title is a big clickbait. But the content is interesting, Product Engineer is a good way to call people more interested in the intersection (Product Designer-Software Engineer) than people usually loves pure tech.

It is something called a T-shaped approach. When developer has both deep knowledge in his own area and understands the core values of other areas of work.
You can actually teach people these things in a company by exposing them to what other teams do.

My 2 cents:
As a good software engineer I take care of the product - so I take care, if my action provide values for it. In certain situation you can do different actions.
What you describes is also part of my job (also in my previous job). So if your software engineers don’t take care of it - maybe they are just… bad? Software engineering is more than just writing code. Writing code - that’s a job for a code monkey.
As a software engineer I want to solve a problem - and this problem involves more than just the technology aspect.
And your title is… questionable.
