VIDEO CLARIFICATIONS: Coding for coding sake is a valid hobby. Tinkering with your editor, window manager, etc. is fun and I still do it. Hobbies are not validated by their practical applications or economic opportunities. I mainly criticize having an unhealthy obsession with hobbyist coding (as I have). This advice can apply to many other fields/practices.

I'm not sure how this video will be received. I hope that you found what I said here useful and/or relatable. I've been re-thinking what I prioritize in my own life, and found that a lot of assumptions I made about my relationship with coding were damaging.

I am definitely NOT telling you to stop coding or find another passion. I am still as passionate as I was when I first discovered this field. I think having a good reset and returning with a clear mind can really help you in the learning process in the long run.

Coding with Sphere

Coding can become all-consuming, crowding out other hobbies and interests. While passion is valuable, over-specialization early in your career limits creativity and project ideas. Maintaining diverse hobbies outside programming provides fresh perspectives, inspires meaningful projects, and expands your comfort zone. Balance enhances rather than diminishes your coding abilities, giving you real-world problems to solve instead of optimizing tools endlessly. Stepping into uncomfortable new areas translates to better adaptability as a developer.

Stop coding so much

I did watch the whole video and he’s right. The programmer to chicken farmer pipeline is littered with burnouts who thought they could code and upskill their way to the top.
On a personal level, even if you love coding, you need a life outside of it. You need to go out and explore, do things, trying things out, and general experience what life has to offer. Even if you don’t care for the bulk of it, you can do it to feed your creativity and passions.
A lot of this “coding all the time” mentality is often purported by companies and middle managers that just don’t want to pay for training. Why pay to train someone when you can trick them into doing it themselves? The thing is, we’re not meant to be doing one thing all the time, all day, everyday, forever and ever amen. Total Work is mental illness.
Some of the worst aspects of the “coding all the time” delusion is what goes on around it:
<ul>
<li>This is not magically make you immune to the tech interviews. They’re notoriously broken and I’ve been through of them to know that is is more luck or connections than skill.</li>
<li>This is not going to make your corporate job into a Caribbean vacation. Most actual programming jobs revolve around communication and working with people than writing the best code on the planet.</li>
<li>This is not going to make you immune to deal with other people’s code. Dealing with other’s people’s work (good or bad) and learning to play well with others are skills in and of their own right.</li>
</ul>
That said, if you like coding as a hobby or just enjoy the act, by all means enjoy yourself, but don’t let yourself get sucked into the Total Work trap or the LinkedIn lunacy that is floating around.

LOL. I think you have right to your opinions but when you make it public with youtube video be ready to take critic. Your opinion is terrible advice and will ruin your porgramming skills, what make you good isnt being latte work like balance twitter guy, you need to grind coding by solivng and writing as much code as you can, not watching shit online wich is on basic level - this is the way wich was fallowed by everyone who make success in programming, on opposite way there is 0 success example, only “whine” “layoffs” “it crisis” videos by disconnected people from reality.

If I had a job I might be able to take this seriously. Until then I will be coding.
