The era of specialization is diminishing as AI transforms the job landscape by automating tasks, demanding a shift towards generalists who possess a diverse skill set. Professionals with adaptability and a broad range of knowledge stand out in complex, unpredictable environments, while traditional specialists must evolve beyond mastery of single skills to remain relevant.

Specialists were built for a world that no longer exists

I do not believe this to be true in any way.
Does the author have any idea on the intricacies behind maintaining a power grid? or designing gigahertz speed microelectronics? or building a communications network?
Some specialists might be replaced by AI, but i don’t think those qualify as specialists to begin with because to be a specialist you need to have knowledge much deeper than the average person in your field, not just having 10 thousand hours clocked in your profession. And as we’ve seen so far, the modern AI (Agents and LLMs) can’t make deep critical decisions unless backed up by human intelligence to lead them into making that decision or to derive that decision from their writings and actions.
But that’s just me though, you think whatever you like.

People are worshipping AI as it solved all problems. There are more at the table than just numbers, since we’re all humans.
Would you run a business you don’t understand? Will you trust openAI availability forever? If everyone is using AI, why would someone choose you/your product over others?
Field experience still is a game changer. AI is just a tool that makes things more acessible, as the internet once did when it first became popular.

I’ve always been a generalist, I came into the field 35+ years ago, before the idea of Front End / Back End had emerged before Web Dev was the default. I did a little bit with (and had to understand) everything I and my team touched. I wrote applications, handled support calls, worked with SQL and databases, pulled, punched-in and terminated cable and configured switches, taught both to clients and as a university instructor. I worked with the client, designed and coded UI and did QA with their staff. So, I’ve always maintained that my generalist experience was marketable, largely because I’ve touched so much… so far, I’m right.

I don’t agree at all.
The thing is. And this is especially true with regards to code.
There is so much more hidden knowledge owned by companies that was never open source that AI’s have never seen.
Industry trade secrets are not public knowledge. AIs have no idea how that stuff works.
That’s the first thing.
The second thing is, Even now as I use AI, it still makes mistakes that I don’t make as a specialist. I find I have to be careful in the scenarios where I use it.
AI will never offer the latest knowledge bleeding edge anything.
It excels only on things that are extremely well documented.
Things that are newer, things that are under-documented, things that have never been done before, both AI’s and humans will struggle with.
But Humans will find a way to move forward. Where as AIs will fail and get stuck.

Additional thoughts are that, AIs are only experts because they have trained on experts.
In a world without experts, the AIs can’t be experts either.
