Developer Andy Nguyen has released ps5-linux, an open-source project that boots a genuine Linux environment on non-slim PS5 consoles via a kernel exploit. The port supports Arch Linux, Ubuntu, and Alpine Linux, runs Steam with access to PC games, and can push the PS5's CPU to 3.5 GHz and GPU to 2.23 GHz with 4K/60Hz HDMI output. Limitations include no native Bluetooth or networking driver support (requiring USB adapters), and the install is non-persistent — the exploit must be re-run after every reboot. Supported firmware versions range from 3.xx to 4.xx, with M.2 SSD support only on 4.xx. Sony is expected to DMCA the repos eventually, making this more of a proof-of-concept than a practical daily driver.
