Solving the mystery of Need for Speed: Underground’s Magazine 22 with SilentPatch

A deep dive into a long-standing bug in Need for Speed: Underground where Magazine 22 (the Drift Track record unlock) was nearly impossible to obtain. The author reverse-engineered the game code and discovered that the unlock function incorrectly passes the best lap score instead of the total score, then divides it by lap count — making the threshold nearly impossible to reach in standard 4-lap Career events. A workaround exists: run a 1-lap Quick Race event so best lap and total score are identical. The fix is implemented in SilentPatch for both PC (ASI plugin) and PS2 (PNACH for PCSX2), along with additional fixes for incorrect drift high score display and a crash caused by long system date formats on certain European locales.
