A thought-provoking argument that the traditional software engineering career path may be fundamentally changing due to AI. Even if using AI tools causes skill atrophy over time, engineers may still be obligated to use them to remain competitive — just as construction workers must lift heavy objects despite long-term physical wear. The analogy to professional athletes with a finite career window is drawn: software engineers may need to plan for a career with a limited lifespan rather than assuming lifelong skill accumulation.

Software engineering may no longer be a lifetime career

I’m pretty sure (good) Senior Devs with 10+ Years are pretty safe. Cause someone needs to orchestrate the heavy lifting.
I fear Junior Devs (that are not willing to learn and handmade stuff) are the for more endangered species currently. I see it daily at work. Bashing their heads against the claude code shell while not getting that not the computer is wrong.

Any career is. The system promotes efficiency, and humans are not efficient by design. Humans are a liability if compared to machines and software, not an asset.

I heavily disagree with the take that “AI is not making us less intelligent”. I think it is very plain to see how rampant that is, I can feel the effects of cognitive offloading just from my own actions with it. How can you not notice it? Your brain is a muscle, it will fade away if you don’t use it.

I’m missing something here. It’s clear that athletes can’t work forever but how does this translate to software engineering? Is the reasoning that skills atrophy to the point where one is no longer valuable and gets replaced by someone younger? But then where would their skills come from and why can’t the older person not maintain their skills the same way?
