Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister of Spain, addressed the World Economic Forum in Davos, criticizing the negative impact of social media on democratic societies. He highlighted how social media's anonymity facilitates misinformation, hate speech, and cyber harassment. He proposed three measures to counter these issues: eliminating anonymity, making social media algorithms transparent, and holding social media CEOs accountable for compliance with laws. Sánchez called for a united effort to return social media to its original purpose of fostering democracy and societal engagement.

Social media is killing democracy

Who needs social media nowadays? Democracy still lives, but outside social media.

“Misinformation” and “Hate speech” are both terms largely defined by whomever is using the term. One person’s terrorist, may be another person’s freedom fighter. One person’s “Hate Speech” may be another person’s religious belief. Media, social or not, has always been biased. News snippets and headlines have simply been replaced by 128 chars and 30 second videos. Selling newspapers and commercials have been replaced with driving clicks. The only difference really seems to be the sources available.
If democracy is the goal, then what could be more democratic than the power given to the individual to publish their own opinions?

“united effort to return social media to its original purpose of fostering democracy and societal engagement”. That is straight up narrative guiding and undemocratic.
Europe makes me feel more repressed or rather makes me look at Europe as more of a represser. With all those laws that limit what You can say online or post, the wish to guide a narrative is a closing off ourselves to a nutshell.
Just the feeling that someone is holding you against your will, and off of information that might make you feel indifferent towards your leaders.

It was already dead, social media just decentralised the disinformation and propaganda. Now your gov can’t just put a few networks under pressure, they have to work across international jurisdictions to control the flow of info and convince you your opinion’s of your own.
