Anubis weighs the soul of your connection using a proof-of-work challenge in order to protect upstream resources from scraper bots.

This program is designed to help protect the small internet from the endless storm of requests that flood in from AI companies. Anubis is as lightweight as possible to ensure that everyone can afford to protect the communities closest to them.

Anubis is a bit of a nuclear response. This will result in your website being blocked from smaller scrapers and may inhibit "good bots" like the Internet Archive. You can configure bot policy definitions to explicitly allowlist them and we are working on a curated set of "known good" bots to allow for a compromise between discoverability and uptime.

In most cases, you should not need this and can probably get by using Cloudflare to protect a given origin. However, for circumstances where you can't or won't use Cloudflare, Anubis is there for you.

I love to see small projects getting big traction.
Though, eventually, it may become another open-source software that’s fundamentally embodied into the global www stack.
We need proper funding for shit like this to ensure security &amp; maintenance!

There’s also a captcha named CAP that’s working with the same principle of POW, I did a PR for it also I am using a modified version on it on one of my websites, I think using POW to minimize bots by pricing them out is best for privacy, because other systems are intrusive and have many false positives.
The system of POW is much more simple meaning it protects you against all bots that won’t want to pay for compute resources based on a difficulty you set, although if difficulty is two highly even running 8 threads or more on the client (your users) will still take maybe too much time, so it’s only feasible at a relative low difficulty.
