University of Washington researchers have developed VueBuds, prototype earbuds with integrated low-resolution cameras that bring visual AI capabilities to a familiar wearable form factor. The earbuds transmit 324x324 grayscale images over Bluetooth to a phone-based visual language model, achieving 87% overall accuracy across tasks like object recognition, translation, and character recognition — comparable to Ray-Ban Meta glasses. The design prioritizes privacy over smart glasses: images are processed locally, only still images are captured, and activation requires a voice command audible to bystanders. Key engineering challenges included fitting cameras within tight power and size constraints and reconstructing a wide field of view from ear-mounted cameras. The research was presented at ACM CHI 2026.
