Researchers at MITRE Corporation have developed a novel laser steering technology using a MEMS-like array of microscopic 'ski slope' structures called a piezo-opto-mechanical photonic integrated circuit (POMPIC). Each slope is fabricated from SiO2, Al, AlN, and Si3N4 layers that bend precisely to redirect light, enabling the display of entire images. The technology could eventually be applied to quantum computing applications requiring precise control of large numbers of lasers.
