Mark Reinhold, Chief Architect of the Java Platform Group at Oracle, proposed a six-month delay to both JSR 376 (Project Jigsaw) and the Java 9 release. Under the new schedule, JDK 9 General Availability would move to March 2017. The delay is driven by Jigsaw needing more time, high community interest and feedback volume, and the need to give build tool and IDE maintainers adequate time to support modular development. The extra time is intended for stabilization and polish rather than adding new features, though reasonable new JEP proposals may still be considered.
