I think the author has confused hosting a front-end in the cloud, best practices in secure web development, and devops processes with the term “microservice”.
A microservices architecture creates a separation of concern between different areas of functionality in an application. At least, that’s been my impression. For example, an e-commerce site that sells widgets might have microservices covering cart management, customer accounts, product catalogs and availability, etc.
And while a front-end would bring that all together in a working end-user application, it doesn’t necessarily connect to each microservice individually to do so. In fact, many would argue that can end up creating a huge attack surface for bad actors to screw around with your data. This is why reverse proxies or the BFF patterns are recommended for microservice architectures.
I guess I’m just annoyed here that the title of the post hints about a discussion about architectural practices and the benefits of microservices. Instead, it’s a discussion on best-practices in serving front-end applications in cloud environments. Things like asset storage, CDNs, and secure coding practices, while important, aren’t solved by moving to microservices.
