Say goodbye to "junior" engineering roles

I can see the junior role disappearing as without it you can’t get any new talent. This will just lead to a decline in the number of developers and normal supply and demand will lead to junior roles. I do believe that the number of junior roles will decline for a number of years until companies realise, they need them though.

It’s always been like this.
Years ago, you would have found a Jr. role with just a programming language (js, php, c#, etc.) or Linux + one cloud. Now you have to know a few frameworks and a handful of libraries too.
It’s as simple as evolution. Top performers are inspiring others to become top performers and that drives the overall quality of knowledge forward. AI is just another tool that accelerates. This tool just accelerates faster than others through the eras.
Soon: Mid level now --&gt; Junior
Not that soon: Senior level now --&gt; Junior
And I am all in for it.

This is just going to further enforce the “get shit out the door” mentality. “simple” features can often balloon due to tech debt. I don’t think an AI model(based on what i’ve seen at time of writing) will be able to intuit the nuance of a project. As with most tools pushed out these days the happy path is the only path considered, screw everything else. We all want to be the best engineers we can be but we also need to say no to crap like this that just wants to push us to over extend ourselves all in the name of corporate greed.

Sure, we’ve been de-skilling ourselves gradually since the beginning of time but since the massive tech arms race we’ve just sped that process up incrementally. That can sometimes create engineers who don’t (need to) know the essentials and we don’t reward that knowledge because it’s not impactful, so then they’re devalued.
IMO this method assumes that AI is an “impactful junior” and can replace humans that it determines are not impactful. Leaders have a choice; either embrace that, or continue to assume that people want to improve, and invest your bottom line to help them do so.
AI has allowed people who don’t know what they’re doing to assume they know more than people who know what they’re doing. This is dangerous.
