Obsidian has launched Web Clipper, a browser extension for highlighting and capturing web pages as durable Markdown files stored locally. Available for all major desktop and mobile browsers (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Brave, Arc, and more), it is open source under the MIT license. The tool addresses three goals: preserving web content against link rot and paywalls, bridging browser-based research with note-taking, and connecting personal knowledge to structured web metadata via Obsidian properties. No usage data is collected, content is fully customizable via templates, and clips are saved as plain-text files supporting tables, code blocks, and math equations.
