Grid Beyond, a Dublin-based startup, has raised a €12 million equity round led by Samsung Ventures to expand its grid-balancing platform. The company uses hardware controllers and software to coordinate solar, wind, batteries, and industrial loads into virtual power plants, currently managing around 1 gigawatt of supply and several gigawatts of demand across Australia, Ireland, Japan, the UK, and the US. Its technology helps data centers connect to the grid more easily by using on-site or nearby batteries to smooth out power fluctuations caused by AI training workloads, while also enabling rapid energy arbitrage thanks to batteries' fast response times compared to traditional peaking plants.
