As someone who never left PHP, I’ve watched it become the “ugly duckling” over the years. Many developers started rejecting it, and still do. Yet it remains simple, and it seems we’ve learned to despise simplicity. Even in its latest versions, going head-to-head with other languages, those who chose to reject it will likely continue to do so.

Quietly?
Laravel right now might be the number 1 framework for building scalable, high-velocity applications. While the JS ecosystem spent the last five years over-engineering solutions to problems PHP solved a decade ago, Laravel was busy perfecting the Modern Monolith.
Laravel’s ecosystem proves that you can have enterprise-grade scaling and sub-millisecond response times without the complexity of a microservices graveyard.
We aren’t returning to the “old” PHP, the rest of the industry is finally catching up to the Developer Experience (DX) that Laravel pioneered. It’s not a regression, it’s a homecoming to sanity.

Kudos on your thoughts - I have felt this same way for a very long time. I have been a programmer since the mid-1990’s and have stay cutting edge, adopting trends, but always return to file based SSR (typically a Linux/Apache flavor loaded with Laravel/PHP). PHP has matured as a language, yet, remains the icon of simplistic elegance. I feel like we have returned to our roots as “tools and information delivery people”. We are full-stack, monolithic monument builders, not architects of fragile distributed systems.
