The Rust Foundation has joined as a founding member of the newly-formed Sustaining Package Registries Working Group under the Linux Foundation. The group brings together package registry leaders to tackle the financial, operational, and security challenges of running public registries at global scale. With open source downloads approaching 10 trillion in 2025 and AI-driven demand accelerating bot traffic and abuse, registries face a growing sustainability gap. The working group aims to develop shared funding models, coordinated security practices, governance frameworks, and ecosystem education to treat registry sustainability as a shared industry responsibility.
