Modern trucks are complex rolling networks with numerous attack surfaces including telematics, ELDs, GPS, and cloud-connected devices, making the transportation sector a prime target for cybercriminals. Beyond ransomware, cyber-enabled cargo theft caused over $725 million in losses in 2025, with criminals using GPS spoofing, credential theft, and identity fraud to steal physical freight. NMFTA advocates applying standard cybersecurity frameworks (NIST RMF, ISO 27001, CIS Controls) with trucking-specific adaptations, especially for small carriers. NMFTA's annual Cybersecurity Conference in September 2026 brings together practitioners and industry leaders to address these challenges.
