Richard Hynes, MIT Professor Emeritus and pioneering cancer biologist, passed away at 81. He discovered integrins, cell-surface receptors essential for cell adhesion, establishing the field of cell adhesion biology. His research revealed mechanisms central to embryonic development, tissue integrity, and diseases including cancer, fibrosis, and immune disorders. Hynes served as MIT Biology Department head and Center for Cancer Research director, mentoring generations of scientists. His work on fibronectin and integrins led to treatments for autoimmune diseases and advanced understanding of cancer metastasis.
