Bun's creator Jarred Sumner has merged a pull request rewriting Bun in Rust. The rewrite passes Bun's existing test suite on all platforms, fixes several memory leaks and flaky tests, reduces binary size by 3–8 MB, and delivers neutral-to-faster benchmark results. The architecture and data structures remain largely the same, with no async Rust used. The primary motivation is gaining compiler-assisted memory safety, which has historically cost the team significant development and debugging time.
