I agree with author on thoughts about performance, and that often we people just don’t know why they use a framework.
But for real apps, which are mostly big and complex now, we can’t use native flow. Development using frameworks have such features as: modularity, isomorphic coding for static and dynamic content, great ability for post-processing, cool tools to easy start project (CRA, Next, Nuxt) an so on.
Of course, every developer who uses framework should know native way and should know reasons why he didn’t choose it for the project, otherwise frameworks become some “magic boxes” .

Insightful article! I’ve noticed in order to use react I need to know a new level of abstraction than when I started to learn web technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
But at the same time, I think JS-first frameworks are really useful as well. Because they make easier to create interactive pages. Maybe it could be my lack of experience in this field, I don’t know
