Streaming-first (what actually scales)
• Events flow through a durable log (Kafka, Pulsar)
• Consumers read at their own pace, derive their own state
• Services evolve independently
• The log is replayable — bugs become recoverable, not forensic disasters
The real unlock isn’t throughput. It’s flexibility at scale.
When your event log is the source of truth:
• Adding a new feature means adding a consumer, not modifying shared state
• You debug by reading the event stream, not tracing a dozen API calls
• You can rebuild any service’s state from scratch by replaying history
Netflix, Uber, and Stripe don’t use Kafka because it’s fast.
They use it because their business data is fundamentally event-shaped — and their architecture reflects that.
The shift isn’t “add streaming.”
It’s “design around events first.”
