An NSF-funded ERVA report warns that the U.S. risks losing its quantum technology leadership to China and the EU without strategic engineering research investment. The report identifies four priority areas: quantum materials (new materials for quantum devices and processors), quantum biology (ultra-sensitive medical sensing and diagnostics), quantum computing (scalable cryogenic systems and production-ready processors), and quantum AI (algorithms for NISQ processors and quantum-enhanced machine learning). The roadmap calls for coordinated investment across academia, industry, and government to transition quantum systems from laboratory demonstrations to manufacturing-ready, deployable technologies.
