Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA) with hosted control planes now allows cluster administrators to configure the cluster monitoring operator, unlocking capabilities previously unavailable. New clusters use OpenShift's default monitoring settings, while existing clusters retain their current configuration. Key changes include: platform metrics no longer persisted by default (previously 100 GiB EBS volumes), retention extended to 15 days (from 11), user workload monitoring disabled by default, and topology spread/tolerations no longer configured by default. New capabilities include configurable alert routing, operator observability for OLM operators in openshift-* namespaces, flexible metrics retention (in-cluster or remote), custom compute placement for monitoring components, and cost savings by removing persistence on dev/test clusters. Seven best practices are provided covering worker node configuration, external watchdog alerting, upgrade readiness, topology spread, pod placement, and retention tuning.
