Red Hat has announced the release of an enterprise-supported version of Podman Desktop, an open source container development tool initially donated to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). Podman Desktop serves as a bridge between local developer environments and Kubernetes production clusters. It has gained notable traction, surpassing three million downloads, and signals the mainstream acceptance of container-based workflows within enterprises. This enterprise-supported version is particularly appealing to corporate developers seeking Docker-compatible container workflows with security fixes, policy enforcement, and service level agreements provided by a vendor.
Currently in technical preview, Podman Desktop integrates closely with Red Hat’s OpenShift and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
