Cloudflare has rearchitected the Workflows control plane (V2) to support the demands of agentic workloads running at machine speed. The new architecture introduces two components — SousChef and Gatekeeper — to horizontally scale the system beyond the single Durable Object bottleneck of V1. Concurrency limits jumped from 4,500 to 50,000 simultaneous instances, creation rate increased from 100 to 300 instances/second, and queued instances capacity doubled to 2 million. The post details the design principles, the role of each new component, how Durable Object alarms ensure reliability, and how the live migration of millions of existing instances was completed with zero downtime by converting old Account DOs into SousChef DOs.
